THE STORY:

Team Isa Fundraiser wrote -

Everything seemed fine during December of 2014. Isa had just performed some routine studies recommended by her doctors due to her dense breast tissue. After identifying a fibroadenoma in her left breast, her surgeon suggested extracting it to prevent future discomfort. Fibroadenomas are benign tumors that are quite common, they are generally no cause for concern. With no cause to rush, and the extraordinary health that distinguishes a 28 year old athlete, Isa scheduled her surgery for just after her second half marathon in March. Nevertheless, just shy of the surgery date, she started to feel something strange in her right breast. It was different. . . it was cancer.

The cancer appeared and spread in a matter of three months. The last thing in Isa’s mind was having to spend her 29th birthday in her second chemotherapy session, with a shaved head, a dry throat and without the chance of eating a big ‘ol piece of birthday cake. She had planned to spend these months trying to conceive the baby that she and her husband Gilberto had always wanted. A critical turning point had been reached.

Isa is facing the most challenging of her ‘races’, a tough battle against breast cancer, stage 3c and which has infiltrated into the lymph nodes in her underarm and chest. As part of her treatment, Isa will receive intense chemotherapy sessions, followed by a double mastectomy and additional radiotherapy treatment. There was no time to cryopreserve Isa’s eggs for the family she and Gilberto had dreamed of.

Her prognosis is much better given her unwavering courage and with the help of GOD she will become a role model for those who want to fight cancer and win! We are certaint that the Almighty will care for her life, and we know she will give back so much into this life, including life itself, once the process is over. Isa has earned it, she deserves it.

After her first chemotherapy session, Isa went straight to the hairdresser to donate her hair before losing it because for her, helping others has always been a priority. In addition to treatment, she has to follow a very strict organic diet, free of chemicals and preservatives and a natural supplements regime to counter the effects of chemotheraphy and protect her vital organs, such as the heart and the kidney. These changes in lifestyle will substantially increase expenses while her job and her husband's will be intermittently interrupted.

Her family and friends, both in Puerto Rico and the United States have decided to be bold and open this account because we know the medical bills will accumulate and we want her to be certain that she will have everything that she needs to make it through. Together we can help her. There is no donation that is too little or good intention that will go unnoticed. One dollar at a time we can make the difference to help our beloved Isa reach the finish line with her arms held high and a beautiful smile.

We are counting on you,

#teamIsa!
