BENEFITING: JAMEL ROBINSON CHILD WELFARE REFORM INIATIVE
EVENT DATE: May 08, 2014
When you open your heart to a child, everyone benefits. The child benefits from the knowledge and guidance of loving parents, and each parent grows through the process of parenting. The best parents help children find what interests them at every age, what kindles their curiosity, and what stirs their heart.
New York child welfare reform advocate and former foster child Jamel Robinson founded the JRCWRI in October of 2008 at age 21.
AFTER SPENDING 21 YEARS OF HIS OWN LIFE IN THE NEW YORK CITY FOSTER CARE SYSTEM WITHOUT BEING ADOPTED, IT HAS BECOME HIS LIFE'S WORK AND UNDYING COMMITMENT TO ENSURE THAT NO OTHER CHILD HAS TO EXPERIENCE THE CHALLENGES HE HAD TO OVERCOME DUE TO THE LACK OF A STABLE, LOVING, AND NURTURING ADOPTIVE FAMILY.
May is National Foster Care Month, and during this month, the Jamel Robinson Child Welfare Reform Initiative (JRCWRI) is hosting the Second Annual We Deserve Love Too! campaign.
In its second year, We Deserve Love, Too! is the first youth-led campaign of its kind in New York, designed to draw attention to the high number of teens in foster care and their need for permanent, loving homes that can provide stability, a sense of belonging, the support necessary to grow into healthy, productive adults, and HOPE!
The right home, with a loving parent and mentor, can make all the difference in a foster child’s life. The average teen in foster care has lived in 3 foster homes. Some live in as many as 25 before “aging out” of the system.Stable, nurturing families bring hope and build resilience among foster youth that have endured poverty, maltreatment, poor health, and inconsistent schooling.
HOPE AND RESILIENCE. That’s why more hearts need to be open to teen adoption.
• To spread awareness of how many teens are in need of loving homes and how adoption at a pivotal point in a teens life can yield positive influence.
• To communicate a message of hope, stability and that teen deserve love too!
• To increase the number of teens 16-21 that are adopted or placed with foster parents.
Today, I'm reaching out to ask for your support of the We Deserve Love Too campaign.
One-third of today's youth in foster care is between the ages of 13 and 19, and fewer than 20% of these youth are anticipating adoption. Most will be released from foster care with no family support system in place.
To learn more about the campaign, please contact me via email at: firstname.lastname@example.org or by phone at: (516) 451.0338 ext. 102.
Thank you in advance for all your support!
