BENEFITING: WEDIKO CHILDRENS SERVICES INC
ORGANIZER: WEDIKO CHILDRENS SERVICES INC
For over 20 years, since my first summer (1995) at Wediko, I have been committed to improving children's lives - and not just any children. But those who are the most vulnerable and most at-risk amongst us. As children, their position in the world is of no fault of their own. Despite general understanding that children are born into their circumstances, there is considerably less understanding for how these children respond to their circumstances and experiences (their subsequent thoughts, feelings, and actions). These same children attend school, participate in community activities, and live with families who care deeply for them.
Wediko partners with children, families, schools, and community providers to not only build understanding for the impact of trauma, adverse childhood experiences, mental health challenges, and learning differences but to also build programs, strategies, and skills on the individual, family, and system level to support better outcomes for these children. Without effective supports and nurturing care, many of these children would continue to struggle academically, socially, and emotionally. Left unresolved, such challenges continue into adulthood, resulting in sgnificant cost to the individual, their family, and society.
WEDIKO MAKES A DIFFERENCE - on every level. Children struggling the most, from across the country, benefit from our specialized residential programs - where they are able to begin the long walk home - developing the skills, self-awareness, and resilience needed to turn their life around. That's where I started my career. I now work with schools in the Boston area to better understand the students in their classrooms, their needs, and the strategies and practices that will best support them.
I am running the 2017 TCS NYC Marathon to support the programs and services of Wediko helping children, families, and schools.
