I’m Samuel Tesfamariam. I’m originally from Eritrea and I’m a member of a group of guys who wants to open what would be the only weightlifting gym in Nakivale. That’s our idea – open a gym where people can come to work out with free weights and lifting equipment we would purchase.
I like to lift to be healthy and improve my physical appearance. But it’s hard to do. The only equipment we have are barbells we made ourselves out of sand, old food cans, metal bars and a little cement. We don’t even know how much they weigh. We have a building for a gym, but no equipment. Even a small amount of equipment would let us build more strength and help us take care of our bodies.
I think weightlifters get a bad reputation. Actually, lifting brings us together. In our group, we have people from different cultures all with different skills. When we get together to lift, we learn from each other.
On June 20, we are running so that we can open the only gym in Nakivale settlement!
