Welcome Home Kits for the Refugee Care Collective
Organized by: Stephanie VanRheen
EVENT DATE Mar 25, 2016
“Silence in the face of evil is itself evil: God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act.” ― Dietrich Bonhoeffer
The Refugee Care Collective, an organization in Portland, is bolstering the network of agencies tasked with welcoming and establishing refugee families in our city. Their work is hard, and good, and so, so important. It is vital for the success of thousands of men, women, and children who will find themselves starting fresh in this Pacific Wonderland; it seems now, it is even more important to stand up to the agenda of vitriol and fear that is being riled up.
For my birthday this year (31!), instead of an indulgent night out with my friends, our simple goal will be to put together three kits- 2 kitchen and 1 bedroom with the target of $310. Any additional funds will be given directly to Refugee Care Collective. Please consider joining in- as I described this to my friends, I don't know if there is much I can say or do to dissuade those who insist on fear and hate, but even this simple act this feels like a double-middle finger, back away slowly, mic-drop kind of big love thing to do in the face of such evil.
(If the refugee crisis has fallen off your radar (as things such as this often do) I'd point you back to this article- "The World is Scary as Hell. Love Anyway")
