Chapter: Wellesley College

Partner Organization: Mutual Education for Empowerment and Rural Action (MEERA) Foundation

Project Description:

This year, MEERA and Wellesley College are partnering to invest in the creation of small family gardens for a rural village in Tamil Nadu, India, which will allow the families to have both a source of food and income in a region affected by HIV/AIDS.

Project Details:
The people of the district of Dindigul are heavily affected by HIV/AIDS. This often prevents people from having access to jobs or other sources of income, making it difficult to buy food and other necessities. Planting small family gardens will allow these families to have an extra source of income as well as food. The money we invest will allow the rural population to have a steadier source of income and nourishment. We hope this improvement will lead to further economic development, more schools, and hopefully to a higher standard of living. In order to measure and evaluate the impact of our project, we will establish connections with the people directly affected by the project. They will be able to tell us directly how much and what may have changed due to the gardens and whether it has helped them. We will also conduct a survey of conditions before and after the gardens have been planted, a year or two down the line, to gauge the impact they may have.

Partner Background:

MEERA Foundation was founded in 2001 in order to help combat the effects of HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis in poverty-stricken parts of India. The foundation has led many marches and organized support for a variety of causes, including TB awareness, providing baby care kits and food to HIV-positive mothers, and a march against the sexual abuse of children. MEERA focuses on the health and safety of HIV/AIDS and TB infected mothers, who are often the backbone of their families, and the well-being of their children.
