Each year for the past decade I have walked/run/ and in years I was injured hobbled for My mother. My mother is a approaching her 18th year as a breast cancer survivor. In October 2015, my mother went through another round of surgery (her third round of reconstructive surgery--4th or 5th surgery since her diagnosis) for her breast cancer. Her first surgery in 1999/2000, I was in Boston. I remember sitting by the phone in my lab...waiting to get a call from Detroit that she pulled through. I was 21 in med school and doing research afraid and alone. I had no one there--in October I was whisked back into that mind frame of the scared kid whose mom was going under the knife and all I could do is wait for a phone call. I know that we are fortunate. In my family alone since my mother's diagnosis we have lost too many and a few more diagnosed with breast cancer. It is moments like this that drive me to walk/run/hobble and fight not just for my mom, my aunts, my cousins...but for my nieces...my sister, For all my family and friends.
Mammograms save lives and insurance companies fight women getting them pre-menopausal though the cancer is our family IS pre-menopausal. Monies from this race funds these screens and subsequent treatments. I am raising funds to help cure the disease that alter my mom and my families lives. Help me in this cause
