THE STORY:

WeOwnTV is a collaborative media education project for disenfranchised youth and young adults that promotes self-expression as a way to explore our shared humanity and build a foundation for the future. Focusing on community engagement, the curriculum balances intensive film production and computer skills training with classes on storytelling. Ongoing mentorship along with technical assistance, multi-channel distribution and the promotion of finished work enables young adults to share their stories and ideas with the world.

With the idea that no one is more qualified to tell the story of Sierra Leone than Sierra Leoneans themselves, WeOwnTV debuted in 2009 facilitating a month-long filmmaking workshop for 18 young men and women in Freetown, the country’s capital. As a result, young filmmakers are creating new works and continuing to gain new skills. In July 2010, fueled and inspired by these young collaborators the doors of the WeOwnTV Sierra Leone Media Center opened to provide a space to meet, create, procure professional work and to continue their education.

In 2011, the young filmmakers of WeOwnTV plan to produce film and video to celebrate and document the country's Golden Anniversary of independence To make this production program a reality, we are working to raise $25,000.

WeOwnTV is fiscally sponsored by Bay Area Video Coalition (BAVC).
