THE STORY:

Mita Gupta wrote -

Kimberly Bal Sloper was a friend, mother, wife, daughter, neighbor, colleague.  Losing her at the early age of 37 affected all of those who knew her so deeply.  The people lucky enough to have known her miss her every day. We miss her smiles, laughs and silliness. We miss her good advice and generosity. Each of us has our own memories of Kim as she meant so much to so many people.

When Kim passed away on October 9th, 2012 some of her closest friends from Dartmouth were searching for a way to honor her.  We found a way we could try!  We are going to run the Harwich Cranberry Harvest Half Marathon on October 6th 2013 together on Cape Cod, close to a year after we lost Kim, to honor her memory and to raise money for Hospice Maui.  Hospice Maui allowed Kim to be in her own home, cared for by their own compassionate nurses and her family.  So far our team consists of Andrea Rosal, Susan Vernal Rogers, Mita Gupta O'Brien, Nina Dutta, Carrie Gilbert & Brendan O'Brien.

PLEASE SPONSOR OUR RUN TO BENEFIT HOSPICE MAUI!!

If you would like to join us let us know!!

Hospice Maui is currently fundraising for a five bed inpatient hospice house.  If we can raise $2500 we can have Kim permanently recognized on the Butterfly Recognition Sculpture in the Hospice house and on the Wall of Tribute in the New Hospice Coordination Center.  Other naming opportunities are available and include a bench in the meditation garden if we raise $10,000!!

More About Why I run...

When I met Kim I was 18 years old.  I felt really lucky that this smart, intelligent, adorable girl from my dorm knocked on my door and invited me to dinner one night.  After that dinner she quickly became a lifelong friend.  Kim understood me like no one else.  We could be silly or serious and loved to spend our free time doing a lot of nothing.  For those who know Hanover some of our special places including breakfast at Lou's (delicious rice krispie treats!) and "our bench" outside Dirt Cowboy drinking coffee and catching up on our days.  We met up while both in different locations in France with a group for a weeklong adventure in Italy.  A year after graduation Andrea, Alli & I went to visit Kim in Maui to experience the paradise she called home.

Although we were farther apart our friendship was never far from my mind.  We were present at each others weddings.  I would call and strain to hear her soft voice while in my noisy car on the way home from work.  As I became a mother some of the best advice I received came from Kim.  Not to mention some cute maternity and baby girl outfits.

Since losing Kim I've been a little bit lost myself.  Something that helped was that I started running in 2013.  Now that I run I have my own time to spend with my memories and thoughts of Kim and her three little princesses she left behind.  I have her memory to give me the strength to push my limits.  Kim was always one of my biggest cheerleaders as I made my way towards my goals and I like to feel she is still cheering me on.
