Communities In Schools New Jersey

THE STORY:

I met Stephen Hughes of Belfast Ireland about nine months ago when his YouthWorks team visited Communities In Schools here in Newark. New Jersey. We found common ground immediately. Both of us were committed to creating innovative and engaging youth projects. And we both agreed that even with social networks, smart phones and seemingly perpetual internet access the youth we worked with both in the USA and in Ireland were not Global. They were using these powerful technology tools to speak to the same network of people they see everyday. We thought "Wouldn't it be cool to design a project where youth from all over the globe can meet examine the issues that are important to all of us" Bang! We See The World was born.

Our mission is to bring together a number of partners in both countries to facilitate a peer mentoring initiative that will allow youth to share experiences and learning across the two continents through video conferencing, social media and video.

So in the last few months we wrote the plan, set up a YouTube channel* to share video, set up our individual Skype for video conferencing and began the journey. The youth in Belfast, Ireland and Newark, New Jersey were the first to join. They quickly embraced and became the leaders of the project. We now have five sites in the USA (Newark (3), Phoenix, Arizona, and Dayton, Ohio) and five sites in Ireland (all in Northern Ireland) and launched our first Virtual Youth Town Hall on September 21, 2010. The response has been incredible! Recently the Pat Convery, Lord Mayor of Belfast and Cory Booker, Mayor of the City of Newark both recorded videos in support of the project.
