BENEFITING: Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation
EVENT: New York City 2014
EVENT DATE: Sep 28, 2014
On September 11, 2001 Firefighter Stephen Siller, married father of five, had just left his shift at Squad 1 when he heard about the first airplane hitting the Twin Towers. He returned to the firehouse to get his gear but could get his car no further than the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel. He strapped 60 pounds of gear to his back and ran through the gridlock to the towers where he lost his life saving others. The Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation honors this hero by holding an annual 5k run from Brooklyn to Manhattan, raising funds to build "Smarthomes" for catastrophically injured service members, helping them to regain their independence. On September 28 I will be participating in this run, which follows the route Stephen Siller took on 9/11. Until recently, I had never even run a mile in my life. However, as a military mom, the mission of the foundation has taken this middle aged couch potato to a whole new level. In addition, the West Point Family and Friends group will have the honor of running directly behind the West Point cadets. The route will be lined with wounded warriors and NYC firefighters holding photos of those who lost their lives on 9/11 while trying to save others. I am humbled at the thought of being cheered on by these amazing heroes and that is reward enough for me. However, it won't bring homes to our disabed service members. Therefore, if you would like to join me in supporting those who sacrificed themselves, please donate to my fundraising page. And whether or not you wish to donate, please thank a military veteran for their service. Thank you.
