Westtown Robotics Fundraising and Resource Drive Challenge
The Westtown Robotics Team—The Metal Moose—is leading a fundraising and in-kind resource donation challenge among robotics teams across the country for Yspaniola, an education organization in the Dominican Republic. Yspaniola provides high quality education programs in a batey community of Dominicans and Haitians, many of whom have limited access to basic resources and civil and human rights. You can learn more about Yspaniola's programs on their website.
The in-kind resource drive will culminate at the Mid-Atlantic Robotics Westtown Competition on April 2 and 3. Read more below about what in-kind resources we're collecting. The fundraiser is to support Yspaniola's education programs. Yspaniola is doing important and challenging work in the Dominican Republic, and we hope that all 38 schools participating in the Westtown Robotics Competition, along with any other robotics teams or individuals who feel inspired, will fundraise through this event to raise at least $7,000 for Yspaniola, a 501(c)3 organization, by April 30, 2016. All of Yspaniola's fundraising and administrative costs are covered by donations from the Board of Directors as well as grants, so your contributions will go directly to supporting Yspaniola's education programs and students.
For the in-kind resource drive, we hope that each of the 38 schools participating in the Westtown Robotics Competition can collect 3-4 backpacks filled with school supplies. These will be given to the over 120 children who study in Yspaniola's Learning Center. Each backpack (non-drawstring) should contain 2 composition notebooks, 1 two-pocket folder, 1 pair of child scissors, 1 pack of pencils, 1 glue/glue stick, 2 erasers, 1 pack colored pencils, 1 pencil sharpener, and one children's book in Spanish! Books can be purchased locally or on Yspaniola's Amazon Wishlist. We are also collecting LEGOs to give children in the Learning Center more access to manipulatives and interactive learning toys and games. Specifically, we're looking for LEGO Education: StoryTales, StoryStarters, LearnToLearn, and Play Themes (food legos, community workers, transportation, animals, etc.); LEGO Duplo; and large plain blocks that we can use for a variety of purposes.
All in-kind donations should be brought to Westtown School in West Chester, PA on April 2 and 3 during Westtown's Robotics Tournament.
Thank you to everyone for participating in our event and supporting education in the Dominican Republic!
