The goal of LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is to help adults affected by cancer a safe, supportive environment to participate in physical and social activities focused on strengthening the whole person. Participants will build muscle mass & strength, increase flexibility & endurance and improve functional ability. Additional objectives include reducing the severity of side effects, preventing unwanted weight changes and improving energy levels & self esteem. Not just focused on physical benefits, the program provides participants a feeling of community with their fellow survivors. Most importantly, our trained staff assist participants in developing their own physical fitness program so they can continue to practice a healthy lifestyle – not only as part of their recovery, but as a way of life.
At the Wallingford Family YMCA, LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is a 12 week program that meets twice a week for 75 minutes. We offer both a daytime and evening group in hopes of accommodating most individual’s schedules. Our daytime group meets on Mondays & Fridays at 10:45AM and our evening group meets on Tuesday & Thursdays at 5:40PM. We generally run programs three times a year during the fall, winter and spring seasons. Prior to starting, all participants meet with a specialist to properly review each survivor’s medical needs and cancer history to create a personal and appropriate wellness plan.
