THE STORY:

Please help us finish our film, Where Women Don’t Dance. WATCH THE TRAILER to your left.

This film is an expression of the ways women continue to be restricted in full expression near and far. Even here in the US women continue to deal with glass ceilings, restricting them from earning equal pay for equal work.

This groundbreaking film is a testimonial to the courageous women who are ready to forge a new path creating opportunities for our daughters, the women of tomorrow. Be part of this historic effort with a contribution. All contributors will receive a mention on our website www.wherewomendontdance.com and in the credits of the film. We appreciate your support in making a dream come true on so many levels.

Ok, so why give...last March, I, Nel Shelby the Filmmaker went on tour with Nejla and her company to Central America. I was able to capture over 37 hours of footage and I got so deep into Nejla's story that I was moved to tears many times. It was so intense. We made this happen with very little money. Then Bob Novak, brilliant sound designer, composed the score for the trailer with very little funds as well. We want to finish this film and we need to cover the costs for editing the film and creating the score for the film. $10,000 will help so very much, BUT even $25 will help, so please help us make this happen. I will keep you updated and will most definitely invite you to the premiere.

If we bring in enough we can expand our creative team to help get this film off the ground. Watch the trailer to your left and read about the story. Thank you a thousand times over.

Nejla Y. Yatkin was born to Turkish-Muslim parents in Berlin, Germany. As she was brought up, life was to be dedicated to her culture. Encouraged by her parents, Nejla studied Turkish folk dance at a very young age. In their mind, this was a way for her to connect to her roots and it also served as a way for her to learn to express/discover herself. At the age of 14, fate brought her to two dance teachers from New York City who lived in Berlin. These two would change her life as they revealed to Nejla new ways of moving that she wanted to explore further. Unlike the folk dance, however, this type of dance would not be viewed well by her parents. Indeed, Nejla had to hide this dancing from everyone she knew because in her family's belief system it was a sin for Muslim women to dance in public. Where Women Don't Dance is a film that celebrates Nejla's strength as well as perseverance and takes you on a journey through her art while she is on tour with her company in Central America.
