The annual sneaker drive is an appeal to members of the NYC running community to give new sneakers to some of the needier kids within NYRR’s youth programming. Most of the kids that participate in Mighty Milers are from underserved schools and unfortunately many do not own running shoes. Instead they try to run in basketball boots or Timberlands. The gift of a pair of proper shoes, fit for running, makes a greater difference than you might expect. Not only do kids tend to become faster and more able runners, but moreover it encourages them to stay with the programs and become healthier and more productive students.
We are asking members of the Whippets and our extended family of runners to consider making a gift this holiday season. Giving back to the young runners in our community is something that I hope we can all get behind. All monies donated will go directly to buying appropriate sneakers at a greatly discounted rate. In 2012 we were able to buy around 100 pairs of shoes with funds raised by the club.
