THE STORY:

Whitney Burdge wrote -

Dear friends, family, and wonderful strangers:

Most of you know that I am working hard to earn a Masters Degree in Architecture, Cultural Identity & Globalisation. The degree focuses on the necessity of “sensitive”architecture as a tool for cultural expression, preservation, and in some cases, intervention. I have had a very fulfilling experience in my work so far, and have now made a plan to take it to the next level.

Since careers without relevant experience are hard to come by these days, I applied and was accepted to a program as a volunteer architect in Accra, Ghana for an amazing organization called Ikando. The link to their brochure below shows the scope of work they are involved in for community improvement and development, something I am very interested in. The brief description below features some of the ongoing projects I could be involved with. Once turning in my thesis work in September, my goal is to volunteer with this program for 10 weeks (until my graduation in London, late November), so I can gain relevant work experience and also improved skills as an architect to increase my chances of finding a long-term career with organizations similar to this.

Of course, this opportunity requires funding, and I’m coming to you for financial support, whether you are able to contribute yourself, or recommend organizations/businesses you know that might sponsor student volunteer opportunities in this capacity. I will be putting my energy into looking for support through grants and businesses in London, as well.

I work at two part-time jobs in London already, just to cover my basic costs of living as a student here, and don’t anticipate being able to earn the amount needed to volunteer, on my own. This is the breakdown of cost required for my participation:

£1267, includes 10-weeks accommodation, 24/7 emergency support, live-in staff support
£500, low-end cost of living expenses (food, travel) budgeted at £50/week
£500, flight
I will be covering the costs of vaccinations, insurance, and required visa
TOTAL NEEDED = £2,267 ($3,600 US)

THE PROJECT!
- The ‘Akwaaba’ project, seeks to develop residential models and an environment which takes into account, culture, history, climate, and economics to shape dwellings, which are both livable and affordable. Currently, Constructs LLC (NGO) is involved in explorations to confirm that the use of bamboo for affordable housing is viable.
- Building a new generation of private homes and commercial buildings featuring modern design and advanced building techniques.
- Developing an eco-water receptacle to replace plastic sachet bags which are used locally in place of plastic bottles for conveniently storing drinking water.

The opportunity to invest my time and talents to Ikando would be very special to me and help me feel better prepared for professional life post-graduation. I sincerely appreciate your consideration in supporting this goal!
