Ironman is a 3.8km swim, 180km cycle and a 42km run. Since my 20's and having seen athletes like Chris Legh and Paula Newby-Frazier struggling to cross the line I have been fascinated by a race that asks so much from an individual and has them coming back again and again.
On March 1 2014 I will be competing in my first Ironman - IM New Zealand (Taupo)
Competing in an Ironman is a selfish endeavour. You need to have an incredibly supportive and tolerant family and group of firends.
In an attempt to balance the equation I would like to use the opportunity to raise some money for a charity that I believe in.
In 2009, Winter Vinecki’s father, Michael Vinecki, died from prostate cancer (which strikes 1 in 6 men). Vowing to help put an end to the disease, Vinecki, who has been competing in races and triathlons since she was 5, took her passion for racing and started TeamWinter.org. The non-profit organization honors her dad by spreading awareness and raising money for prostate cancer research.
Earlier this year, Vinecki set out to break a world record for her father. She wanted to become the youngest person ever to complete a marathon on each of the seven continents. In November she completed the attempt sucessfully.
This young woman is an inspiration and I would love to be able to contrinute to who efforts. If you feel similarly and are able to do so, please donate gernously and help Winter beat Prostate cancer.
