BENEFITING: MISSIONARY SISTERS OF THE HOLY MARTYRS
The Missionary Sisters of the Holy Martyrs (Las Ermamas Misioneras De Los Santos Martires) serves to live as the exemplification of God's love. We do this by finding the poorest of the poor, in this case, a small indigenous village of Potoichan in Guerrero, Mexico. We try our hardest to help the local community to improve their livelihood through assisting in their education, providing basic medical assistance and creating local and sustainable employment opportunities.
We have been living with the people of Potoichan for the past 9 years. Since our first arrival, some of the things we have been fortunate enough to achieve so far are:
- Teaching Spanish to the indigenous population
- Assisting in various subjects at local schools of all levels
- Successfully opening and operating a local bakery
- Successfully opening and operating a small medical clinic
- Training a group of women in arts and crafts production
and of course, spreading the Word of God.
However, we would like to do more for the people and this is where we need your help. We are struggling to expand our work due to a lack of resources. The situation is very tough in Potoichan. The hilly nature of the area makes farming a very unsustainable mode of economic development. So a large number of men often go to larger cities such as Mexico City, or even move to the U.S. in search of employment. Many unfortunately don't come back. So we are doing our best to help the women find a source of income. We also assist with the high school here in Potoichan and bring willing students to Mexico City and provide housing for them while they try to get themselves into a local university. We provide most basic medical care we can with the limited resources we have. We also run a small bakery where we provide bread for the 1st and 2nd graders at a local school.
We try to do as much as we can here for the people and with your help, we can do more to help them.
