Conquering Mt. Kilimanjaro in the Quest for Improved Local Healthcare
In raising awareness for the need of better healthcare conditions in Tanzania, five young mothers are climbing Mount. Kilimanjaro March 2014. Initiator of the Expedition, Mrs.Waheeda M-Bharwani said "Given the alarming maternal and infant mortality rate in Tanzania, women ought to stand up and do something about it. This is why the theme of this cause and expedition is: We can’t help everyone, but everyone can help someone.”
Bharwani started the initiative Why PAUSE in 2013, with the aim of improving the on-going socio economic struggles Tanzanians encounter including clean running water, mediocre medical conditions, reducing maternal and infant mortality rate and empowering Tanzanians through education in medicine. "I want the first awareness campaign to be big, and what better way than then to aim for Uhuru Peak on Mount Kilimanjaro."
Joining her are four women, Nahida Esmail, Jamila Karim, Hamidah Lalji and Suhaila Kermali. The group consists of professionals in different fields, all mothers with young children. As part of living in Tanzania they have faced the hurdles in the healthcare system. "There is no bias, it doesn’t matter who you are or where you are from."
Bharwani, a real estate developer by profession and mother to three said, “It’s been a lifelong dream to reach Africa’s rooftop. By creating awareness, we hope the climb will inspire other nations to PAUSE and contribute to this beautiful country-Tanzania. We hope to promote an awareness that there are medical supplies sitting unused in developed nations that can be utilized in developing countries, saving lives. In turn doctors will be able to educate and empower Tanzanians.“
Funds raised from this Expedition through Why Pause (a non-profit organization) will be used to support a joint mission between AFYA Foundation (www.afyafoundation.org) and FAME (www.fameafrica.org), to provide medical supplies from North America to the smaller villages of Tanzania. In addition FAME continues to assist the villages of Tanzania by setting up mobile medical centers and empowering local Tanzanians into educating them in medical schools.
