Dear Family and Friends,
The Bolsa Chica Conservancy is doing vital work in preserving coastal resources like the Bolsa Chica Wetlands through science-based education and restoration programs. With your help, we are building a generation that understands the importance and science behind ecosystems, the connection of these ecosystems in our human lives and their role in conserving Bolsa Chica through their active participation in critical restoration work at the wetlands.
Despite the importance of wetlands and watersheds to biological diversity and productivity, only 41% of adults understand what a wetland or watershed is. Sheparsdson et al. (2007) found that 71% of students tested had misconceptions of watershed hydrology and did not understand biology in watershed systems. The Bolsa Chica Conservancy seeks to address this problem by educating our youtheral public about the importance of these wetland habitats and the land-sea interface through science-based interpretation and a variety of community-based conservation activities. This year, among a number of initiatives, we'd like to expand reach to benefit more students in underserved communities through our Windows to Our Wetlands program, a travelling STEM-based education program that teaches students about wetlands, watersheds and conservation. It is part of our Community Action Restoration and Education (CARE) program that engages youth and adults to increase their knowledge and actively participate in the care of our coast and wetlands.
Each year, we fundraise to help support this work. We pursue and receive grants for specific projects, but donor dollars provide critical support. If our work resonated with you and would like to make an investment in our future stewards, please consider taking a minute to donate $25, $50 or $100. Our goal is to raise $20,000 to reach 1,000 students in underserved communities to cover the cost of $20 of each participant. It is easy to contribute to the campaign.
