THE STORY:

AVIAN RESEARCH & CONSERVATION INSTITUTE INC wrote -

For decades, Cuba’s stunning biodiversity has been buffered from the impacts of economic development. However, as its future brightens, the country will be challenged to accommodate growth while saving the plants and animals that make this land so alluring. Wildlife biologists will need reliable data to chart a course for conservation.

Alieny González Alfonso and Ianela Garcia-Lau are two Ph.D. candidates from the University of Havana that have shown strong scholarly discipline and dedication. But a passion for sound science and an indomitable spirit will not keep their old field vehicle running, provide desperately-needed equipment and technology, or enable them to travel for training and professional development.

THE PROMISE:
ARCI has launched the Wings of Promise project to help Alieny and Ianela protect their country’s spectacular birds and their essential habitats.

In the coming year, working together in Cuba and the United States, we will provide training and equipment to these promising students to help progress their studies on the imperiled Reddish Egret and the endemic Cuban Martin.

Training
Alieny and Ianela will come to Florida for a three-week intensive training program in May 2016 conducted by ARCI and its research collaborators. The students will learn:

  • Safe and effective bird capture techniques
  • How to select and carefully attach tracking devices
  • Mapping and analytical techniques for interpreting tracking results
  • How biologists and managers do their jobs on the conservation lands of sub-tropical Florida – sister ecosystems to those our Cuban colleagues will be charged with protecting

Equipment:
Alieny and Ianela will return home with what they need to enhance their research, along with ARCI’s commitment to assist them in the field and lab as their research unfolds.

  • Remote-tracking devices best suited to their study species and questions
  • Radio equipment for direct field observations
  • Mist nets, poles, and materials for making safe traps to catch, mark, and release birds
  • GPS receivers, binoculars, spotting scopes, compasses, and field supplies

Your donation will be an enduring investment in young professionals shaping the conservation future of Cuba’s priceless wildlife resources.
