Winni's Story

A couple months ago, we received a rescue request for a very sweet, but very large 2 year old Mastiff with hip dysplasia. Based on the intake photo, we could tell she was overweight, but it wasn't until she was in our care that we realized just how "big" she truly was...

Winni's weight at intake was a staggering 240 LBS (see pictures)

Our team of doctors had never seen a dog this overweight before. At this weight, Winni is extremely unhealthy. Her body condition score is a 9/9 - the worst a dog can receive - meaning she has massive fat deposits on her abdomen, spine, neck, and base of tail. Her spine and ribs are not palpable, buried under somewhere around 3-4 inches of fat.

She is too heavy to walk. When she does try to walk, it hurts. She can only make it very short distances before laying down again. She can't go up and down stairs, and is at constant risk of tearing the tendons in her knees. It takes a minimum of 4 people to "lift" her into a vehicle because she can't do it herself. Basically, the vet said she is the equivalent of a 700 lb human being.

Upon intake, we immediately started Winni on a weight management program, but due to her size, and the complications that can arise from being this heavy, we transferred her care to a weight loss specialist. As with all weight loss programs, you have to be careful... losing weight too quickly can cause strain on the body, so we want to make sure we give Winni the best care possible!

Winni recently had her very FIRST meeting with the weight loss specialist! The techs met us outside with a portable, hydraulic exam table because Winni is unable to get out of the car and walk in on her own. When the vet entered the exam room, she was shocked! Despite knowing the history and reviewing the vet records, she was not prepared for exactly how overweight Winni is.

The GOOD NEWS is, Winni has already lost weight! At her last weigh in she was down to 214lbs!

The bad new is, Winni's care is going to be very expensive. Your donation - no matter how large or small - will go towards getting Winni the absolute best care possible. We are raising money to pay for her medications, joint supplements, x-rays, stimulating exercise plan, wellness checks, and weigh-ins just to name a few.

If we can raise enough money, Winni is also going to start doing HYDROTHERAPY!! Basically it is a big underwater treadmill that will use her own buoyancy to lift some of the strain from her joints, and allow her to use her legs. We are hoping that we can rebuild some of the muscle in her legs, and get her weight down enough that she can start to enjoy walking again.

Winni definitely has a long road ahead of her, and we can't do it with out your generous donations!! Thank you for considering to help Winni on this journey!
