BENEFITING: AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF ZOO KEEPERS
EVENT DATE: Sep 21, 2013
Let's make WINOS for RHINOS a reality- help us match our $500 SPONSORSHIP.
This sponsorship will be used as logistical support to bring this event to fruition. All sponsorships are needed by JUNE 1st.
While on a sunset game drive in Kenya last year, the "Winos for Rhinos" fundraiser was born. This unique conservation fundraiser will be a wine tasting/tapas event focused on South African wines and Asian/Indian inspired food held in conjunction with a wildlife photography auction. Held at The Leonardo- a contemporary science and art museum located in the heart of downtown Salt Lake City, the event will be held in the Fall of 2013 in conjunction with World Rhino Day (September 21st) and will benefit rhinos, rhino habitat and the people & wildlife who share their homes worldwide.
These beautiful, prehistoric beasts have roamed the earth for over 50 million years but whether they survive even 20 more is in jeopardy. Every 11 hours another is lost...FOREVER. (Just last year it was every 17 hours!) The poaching crisis has steadily escalated to truly alarming rates. In response to this global crisis we simply had to do something to help.
In South Africa alone, over the last 5 years: 2007- 13, 2008- 83, 2009-122, 2010-333, 2011-448 and the number for 2012…a devastating 668. Projections for 2013 exceed 1000! Rhinos play a vital role in how vegetation can thrive, thus having a direct impact on ALL species sharing their habitats. The benefit sanctuaries protect charismatic mega fauna, as well as hoofstock, small mammals, countless rare and endangered birds, reptiles, insects and even coral reefs, as well as support strong community development through literacy, hunger, health, women’s business and water conservation projects.
Funds raised the night of the event will be used to fence in and protect these precious areas, purchase planes and vehicles to curtail poaching, translocate rhino into sanctuaries & parks, purchase cameras for censusing, for salaries for anti-poaching security guards, provide patrol stations/equipment and training of park guards in anti-poaching skills. Bowling/Winos for Rhinos also supports strong community development. The local people who live in these regions benefit through supported schools and literacy programs, water projects, women's business programs and health clinics just to name a few. With this support, we hope to conserve all 5 rhinos and their ecosystems worldwide!
