THE STORY:

WASHINGTON IRELAND PROGRAM FOR SERVICE AND LEADERSHIP wrote -

We 'won' the lottery and got places in the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington DC! Please consider sponsoring our marathon for a great cause.

Meet the Team!

Kathryn Walls (Class of 2000, MT: 2001 & 2003):

Kathryn is a corporate lawyer in Belfast and started running 4 years ago when she agreed to 'run' a 10k to raise funds for the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital in Dublin in memory of her sister Eithne. In October 2013 she completed her first marathon in Dublin, raising over £3,000 for the hospital.  This experience inspired her to try put a WIP alumni team together to run the Marine Corps Marathon and, in time honoured tradition, give back to WIP. Her goals  for MCM are (1) to  finish (2) to try and improve on her Dublin time and (3) hopefully inspire other alumni to take part in MCM so that this can become an annual fundraiser for WIP.

Claire Savage (Class of 2000)

Claire Savage is a BBC reporter in Northern Ireland and is also President Elect of the Rotary Club of Belfast.  Claire is no stranger to a challenge however she only took up running seriously a year ago, so this could be her biggest challenge yet!  Claire recently competed in the Belfast half marathon in preparation for the Marine Corps Marathon in DC.  Claire is a strong advocate for the Washington Ireland Program and is a great believer it is as relevent as ever in post conflict Northern Ireland where there are still huge political/social/educational/economic divides for young people.

Ally Sinclair (Class of 2001)

Ally works with Barclay's Bank in London and took up running three years ago as a personal challenge. He completed a couple of half marathons before doing the Brighton marathon in 2012 to raise money for the MS Society. The lure of Washington was too much this year and Ally has decided to do his second marathon for WIP's 20th anniversary. His objectives are to improve his Brighton time, raise money for WIP and provide an incentive for pounding the Thames tow path in a regular basis!

Claire Rumpsa (Class of 2004, MT: 2005)

Claire is the Director of Engagement for the Washington Ireland Program and was one of the first members of the local running club in her hometown of Dundrum, Co Down. Now based in WIP's Washington DC office, Claire's marathon training has thus far consisted of a mix of running after the WIP Class of 2014 and frequently getting lost among DC's historic monuments! The Marine Corps Marathon will be Claire's first marathon and through this experience, Claire aims to raise funds to 'pay it forward' so that many other up and coming young leaders from Ireland and Northern Ireland will be able to participate in WIP for years to come.
