BENEFITING: Make-A-Wish Ohio, Kentucky & Indiana
ORGANIZER: Make-A-Wish Ohio, Kentucky & Indiana
EVENT: W.I.S.H. Indiana
The excitement is rising with each day as Michael, my Make-a-Wish grant recipient, and his family prepare to head on a Disney Cruise at the end of April --- their trip of a lifetime! It's surely an "earned" experience. Michael is a 10 year old boy who received an "angel donor heart" nearly a year and a half ago. Since birth, this young man battled through 5 congenital heart defects, the most severe being 'Double Inlet Left Ventricle,' which means only half his heart worked properly.
This is a condition in which the heart becomes weakened and enlarged. As a result, the heart cannot pump enough blood to the rest of the body. He has been a "guest" at Riley Hospital through over 30 major medical procedures/surgeries, one of those experiences lasting 126 days.
I've always tried to reach into the community throughout my career in a variety of ways. Most of these acts of generosity have been a-little-here-a-little-there types of donations. For some reason when the opportunity with Make-a-Wish was presented to me, I found my heart beating at a different pace...a pace that suggested that its time to make a more dramatic impact on the life of someone that has faced health challenges that my southern Indiana brain cannot comprehend.
Michael's that answer for me --- his eyes light up when I just mention the cruise opportunity (so does his family's)! The entire family has been through hard knocks as Michael faced each chapter of his body's development and hardships. It's now Michael's turn to truly get some rewards in life...and to do this with the Disney family is the answer!
As Walt Disney is quoted, "If you can dream it, you can do it!"
