Chuck was Diagnosed with advanced (stage 4) Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the throat and lungs on 9/2/15. Due to the rapid growth in multiple locations, neither radiation or surgery were viable treatment options. Doctors immediately ordered Chemotherapy in an effort to slow the progression of the cancer. Chemotherapy began on 9/16/15 and resulted in a great deal of sickness and pain which rendered Chuck unable to work. After several rounds of chemo, Doctors concluded that the treatment was not successful and discontinued chemo, placing him in a clinical trial. Recent complications resulted in the placement of a tracheotomy as well as a feeding tube, which halted the clinical trial treatment plan. Test results yesterday, March 2, 2016, indicated that treatment was again unsuccessful, as the tumors had multiplied; treatment was once again discontinued. The Doctors offered what they referred to as "one last treatment option"; a different type of chemotherapy which has only a 15% survival rate. This news comes just six months from the original diagnosis. However, they have just learned that it is the maximum length of time covered by "Short-Term" Disability.
