Grace Lee

Hello everyone,

My name is Grace Lee and I am just one of many rising advocates for the human rights of refugees around the world. As you are likely reading this comfortably in a protected shelter, there are people around the world fleeing for their lives, for the sake of their children and for the sake of their parents. Infants, children, teens, adults, and the elderly. Only in these times are the bodies of water safer than land. What once was their home ground has now become a battleground. What once was life is now a nightmare. What once was pure life is now lamented death. There are millions of lost lives unrecorded, unseen by the media. The refugee crisis is an apparent and obvious issue in Syria, Somalia, Iran, and many other less-commonly heard countries. Day by day, violence takes over and each life. Life is buried under the debris, dust, and ruins. Day by day, we deliver a farewell to yet another precious life that could have been anything. Although the issue may seem so distant, our inalienable human rights are what makes the refugee crisis that much closer to the heart. A threat to the basic human right to live in security and prosperity should strike the rest of the world as a threat. When innocent children and individuals are chased out of their homes by bombs and terror, there is clearly something wrong. This is not what our basic, humane principles allow. As Martin Luther King Jr. once stated himself,

"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere..."

Justice is not exclusive. Justice is not costly. Justice is universal. I decided to start this online fundraising page because of the pain that built up in my heart. As I watched video after video with warnings of graphic images, I knew there had to be something I could do. Even just by raising awareness, I yearn to initiate a chain reaction that will never see an end. Every cent that you donate will directly be sent to the UNHCR, also known as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Crowdrise will directly mail the money on the 15th of every month to this charity.  All donations will be processed to the US Association for UNHCR. The UNHCR reaches out to over 120 countries. However, the UNHCR currently notes the crisis specifically in Syria as an emergency, the "largest humanitarian emergency of our era". War has been ravaging the streets for over 6 years, producing over 5 million refugees. But, with just $20, buckets can be provided to upto 4 Syrian families to transport water, hold waste, and to wash or cook. Lending a hand does not always mean giving up your entire salary or a room in your home to a refugee family; it's effortless and easy. We listen and love.

This is just a small token of my heart and effort. I hope that no matter the amount, you and your neighbors and my neighbors bring awareness. There are numerous ways to help out. Whether it be starting your own online fundraiser page, sending a letter to a child refugee (, or simply spreading awareness, it is a way to hear their voices. We could take a minute to listen to the story of a refugee, take a minute to consider what goes on the other side of the world. Any penny, any dollar, and any sharing of information or this page with your own friends, family, relatives, colleagues, or neighbors would not only mean the world to me, but most importantly, to a precious life somewhere out there hanging onto hope. For more information as to what the UNHCR does, where their money exactly goes to, and for an updated account of the refugee crisis, click here:

We've seen it on the news and we've lamented and grieved over the tragedies. People often think that as soon as the millions of refugees make their way safely across borders, they are set to go. However, these crossing borders are vulnerable to even more death numbers and risk. And we fail to even imagine what it's like having to start a new life from scratch, in an already well developed society. Now, it is our job to react and respond. Foremost, I sincerely and genuinely thank each and every one of you for taking your time for reading this. I would greatly appreciate it if you kept this cause in your prayers and thoughts. This is not out of duty or obligation, but solely out of love for our fellow brothers and sisters who smile, laugh, and love like we do.  If we do not answer the pleas and cries abroad, who will? I believe that there is hope.

We must not let the miles distance ourselves from our brothers and sisters. Let love be the conqueror. Let peace be the guardian. Let hope be the shield. Indestructible and unshakeable love. Love is love. And with love, we are forever #WithRefugees.

“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ (Matthew 25:40).

As I created this page, Birdy's song, "People Help the People" came immediately to mind. Feel free to listen to this song, personally, it spoke measures and touched my heart - It's as simple as people just helping people.

 People help the people
And if your homesick, give me your hand and I'll hold it
People help the people
And nothing will drag you down
Oh and if I had a brain, Oh and if I had a brain
I'd be cold as a stone and rich as the fool
That turned all those good hearts away
