This year, WITS is working to send all of our students home for summer break ready to read. The literacy skills students gain through working with their volunteers will be put to use over the summer with WITSummer Books.
For $30, you can send WITSummer Books home with one student; $750 sends WITSummer Books home to an entire classroom of students.
In partnership with The Goulden Touch, Bears' kicker Robbie Gould's public charity, each WITS student will receive WITSummer Books – a bag filled with five grade-level appropriate books (one fiction and four non-fiction), a "think sheet" for each book with corresponding activities, and a summer reading journal.
Research shows that during summer vacations, students lose important knowledge and ground gained during the school year. Low-income students have an especially high risk for this "summer slide." Summer literacy learning for disadvantaged students tends to be markedly slower when compared to more advantaged students who tend to have more access to both books in the home and enriching summer learning experiences.
With WITSummer Books, WITS students will add to their at-home libraries as well as have the opportunity to continue developing literacy skills through "think sheets" aligned with Common Core State Standards that foster parental participation and reinforce learning.
Help WITS share the power of summer reading and send a student home with WITSummer Books.
Donations will be matched, dollar-for-dollar up to $10,000, by an anonymous donor.
