BENEFITING: Lakota Children's Enrichment
EVENT DATE: Sep 16, 2015
My name is Wiyaka Little Spotted Horse. I am an Oglala Lakota from the Pine Ridge Indian reservation. I am 15 years old and a freshman at the Little Wound High School in Kyle, SD.
I was one of 30 Native Youth from across the country who was selected to attend the NIHB Youth Summit in Washington DC from September 16-21, 2015.
I need your help raising $2000 for airfare and other expenses related to the trip.
I applied for the NIHB program because I saw it as an opportunity to share my story of overcoming mental health issues through art and Lakota culture -- which have given me a way to connect to my feelings and to create an outlet for expression. A year ago I felt that I had very little to live for. Eventually, I made the choice to open my mind and to make healthier choices, and now I have a more positive outlook on life.
I enjoy writing, poetry, music and art and I have become an active Youth Advisory Board member for Lakota Children’s Enrichment. I am really proud to be part of LCE's group of youth leaders, all of whom are committed to being positive role models and to helping each other and the community.
This last year -- for the first time in my life -- I set goals! One goal is to travel and the other is to attend college. Applying to the NIHB Program was a big step for me and being accepted into the program is more than amazing.
A year ago, I would never have thought that anyone would be interested in hearing what I have to say. Although the NIHB will provide room and board for me and a chaperone, there is no funding for airfare. In addition, the week-long conference will require me to wear "business professional" clothing and shoes, which I do not own.
I have applied for funding from tribal sources, but as of today I have not received any funding. Below is my projected budget. If any extra money is donated, then those funds will be applied to LCE's other programs! $
- $1,000 airfare for me and a chaperone to fly from Rapid City SD to Washington SD
- $300-$400 for "business professional" clothing and shoes that I am required to wear during the week
- $200-300 for incidental expenses (gas money to get to airport, toiletries, headphones for editing videos, etc.) PLUS,
- the Crowdrise transaction and credit card fees. NOTE: the optional "processing fee" that you will be asked if you'd like to pay at checkout does NOT go towards these fees or to LCE -- it is an optional donation to Crowdrise.
TOTAL Fundraising Goal: $1600-2,000
