Join the Wings of Karen® Local Heroes
Wings of Karen is a 501(c)(3) non-profit breast cancer foundation supporting research in the Pacific NW, benefiting women everywhere.
The mission of this community based organization is to fund promising breast cancer research in the Pacific NW. We are committed to finding a cure, while empowering and educating women with a positive, helping hand. In the spirit of Karen Denmark, Wings of Karen is a resource that shows the strength, courage and beauty of those fighting back at cancer.
It is the goal of the foundation to fund the study of all aspects of breast cancer, including, but not limited to, prevention, detection, and treatment.
Wings of Karen contributes all net proceeds to the breast cancer research and clinical program at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, a powerful collaboration between UW Medicine and Fred Hutchison Cancer Research Center, and other life-saving institutions across the Pacific Northwest. With such a wealth of internationally-renowned research centers in our own back yard, our funds help to keep innovation, research, and talent local.
By hosting events and raising funds in the same communities where the research is funded, all are empowered, knowledge is spread, and individuals (and companies alike) are tied to the success and outcomes. Donors know where their dollars are spent, and that it’s promoting knowledge, expertise and jobs in the economy in which they live.
Last year’s 5k Bra Dash drew over 2,000 participants and volunteers, and raised over $100k. All costs were covered by generous sponsors like yourself, enabling all proceeds to go directly towards two innovative research projects:
- The Wings of Karen Cancer Vaccine study, led by Dr. Nora Disis at the UW, enabling the project to move into trials.
- The Dr. Mary-Claire King lab to study the genetic pathway of breast cancer that is affecting many women being diagnosed in their 20’s and 30’s. Dr. King is famous her discovery of the BRCA1 and 2 genes, the only known genetic links to breast cancer.
In it’s first year, Wings of Karen awarded its first grant of $30k to Seattle Cancer Care Alliance to fund a pilot program that studies new methods of detection in younger women. Since inception in 2012, Wings of Karen has granted almost a quarter of a million dollars in pursuit of a cure, all local, all innovative and all volunteer-raised.
The 5k Bra Dash® is a CELEBRATION of what we CAN do as a COMMUNITY to join the fight against breast cancer.
