BENEFITING: WOMEN ORGANIZED TO MAKE ABUSE NON EXISTENT INC
EVENT DATE: Mar 29, 2015
On March 29th, I will be joining the W.O.M.A.N., Inc. (Women Organized to Make Abuse Nonexistent) team in participating in the San Francisco Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon. This event is one of 31 road running races spanning nine countries and W.O.M.A.N., Inc., an anti-domestic violence agency, has been chosen as one of the official charity recipients of the San Francisco race. I am very excited about participating in this event and support the survivors of domestic violence!
W.O.M.A.N., Inc. was founded in 1978 and has been supporting survivors in our community since then. Last year, they answered close to 12,000 calls on the crisis line and met one-on-one with over 140 survivors of domestic violence. The agency stands alone across the state in that they are the only 24 hour hotline that is not connected directly to a shelter program. This sets the agency apart from larger, one-stop-shop agencies as W.O.M.A.N., Inc. honors the strengths, choices and unique strategies each survivor brings.
As a woman personally affected by domestic violence in the past, this cause is very important to me. It is a societal problem that affects a large percentage of our population, with one out of every four women and one out of every fourteen men having experienced domestic violence at least once in their lives. A lot of work needs to be done to bring an end to domestic violence and it cannot be accomplished individually, but together as an organized effort. W.O.M.A.N., Inc. is one such nonprofit organization I believe in that effectively works towards this goal.
I am asking my friends and family to consider sponsoring me for this event. I am aiming to raise at least $750 for W.O.M.A.N., Inc. and if I can do so, my race registration will be free! I do hope you can support me
