More than 15 million children will be exposed to domestic violence in the United States this year. Men can be victims too. My name is Carmen. I am a survivor of domestic violence and a mother of four. A few years ago, the person that once told me “I love you” started hurting me. Maybe you ask yourselves, why didn’t she leave him when the abuse started? The answer is that I was scared of losing my kids. My abuser told me, 'If you leave me, you won’t be able to take the kids with you.
One night, he arrived home and turned up the TV. He told me that if I screamed no one could hear me, and he started to beat me. As he held me down, all I could think was: my life is over. He passed out drunk, and when he left for work the next day, I called a friend crying. She gave me the number to Women Aware. It was the call that changed my life.Through the support at Women Aware, I received the gift to live, to do better with my kids, to not fear getting beaten again. I received the gift of a new life.
Today, I have a beautiful apartment that my kids call home through Women Aware’s Supportive Housing Program. My children completed Women Aware’s trauma treatment program, and they are excelling in school. I have earned my GED, and today I am enrolling for college. Through the support of Women Aware, I am confident now in what I want out of life. I’m my own person again. I survived.
