THE STORY:

WOMEN AWARE wrote -

By setting up a fundraiser for our cause and reaching out to your network, you can help us make an even bigger impact. It takes less than five minutes to set up. All you have to do is click 'Fundraise for This Community Partner' at the right (or scroll to "The Team" on your mobile device and click "Join Team"). Then, when the Challenge starts on October 2nd, share your page with everyone you know and start raising money. We're ready to raise as much money as we can so we can win the $100,000 grand prize donation. Why? Beacause...

We say, "1 in 4 No More!"

1 in 4 women will be victims of severe violence by an intimate partner during their lives. And it's not just women who are affected by domestic violence. More than 15 million children will be exposed to domestic violence in the United States this year. Men can be victims too.  Join our "1 in 4 No More" campaign now to take a stand against domestic violence today. All proceeds will benefit Women Aware.

Carmen's Story

My name is Carmen. I am a survivor of domestic violence and a mother of four. A few years ago, the person that once told me “I love you” started hurting me. Maybe you ask yourselves, why didn’t she leave him when the abuse started? The answer is that I was scared of losing my kids. My abuser told me, 'If you leave me, you won’t be able to take the kids with you.

One night, he arrived home and turned up the TV. He told me that if I screamed no one could hear me, and he started to beat me. As he held me down, all I could think was: my life is over. He passed out drunk, and when he left for work the next day, I called a friend crying. She gave me the number to Women Aware. It was the call that changed my life.Through the support at Women Aware, I received the gift to live, to do better with my kids, to not fear getting beaten again. I received the gift of a new life.

Today, I have a beautiful apartment that my kids call home through Women Aware’s Supportive Housing Program. My children completed Women Aware’s trauma treatment program, and they are excelling in school. I have earned my GED, and today I am enrolling for college. Through the support of Women Aware, I am confident now in what I want out of life. I’m my own person again. I survived.
