As a graduate student, I first met Rhobai Musimbi, founder of Kakemega Women Telecentre in Kenya, in 2014 while searching for women's groups to take on the challenges of domestic violence.
Separated by thousands of miles, through LinkedIn and email and Skype, soon we learned we shared much in common - we were both alone, the odds were against us, and yet we both had a passion for women's health and education. Rhobai and I became good friends, helping one other with moral support through often difficult times, and our partnership set the stage for the launch of our project - KAKAMEGA WOMEN TELECENTRE.
We are trying to raise money to buy a plot of land on which to construct the women's learning center, because rent is getting so expensive and it would be nice to have a place of one's own on which to hatch this idea.
Last month, I ran the San Francisco Half Marathon to help raise funds for our cause. I wanted to run the full-length marathon but caught a cold all week, and could not even walk much. But I finished in the middle of the pack. This autumn I am signed up to run the BERKELEY HALF MARATHON!
We are hoping to raise public awareness of the plight of women and also raise support for the construction of Kakamega Women Telecentre. If you and your friends are able to help, we humbly thank you for your support!
