Strength in Diversity

Promote multi-cultural diversity and enhance community relations in the Great Lakes Bay Region by enriching the lives of families, mentoring youth, community service, and collaborating with other organizations.

Women of Colors (WOC) is an independent nonprofit organization that has been an active community partner since inception in 1993.   The organization was developed with a diverse group of women sharing our ideas to improve the Saginaw community. WOC recognize the strength of diversity by not focusing on our differences, but acknowledging our similarities. Members and volunteers provide empowerment and quality educational sessions at monthly meetings and special help others. In 1993 WOC hosted the first annual "Mothers Against Crime March/Rally," and marched in crime infested neighborhoods to say “No” against crime. We also sponsored aerobic classes for disadvantaged women.

WOC developed the Great Empowering Motivational Sessions (GEMS) youth mentoring programs that consist of Girl Pride, Sugar & Spice, Young Men Who Dare, GEMS Parent Committee, Students and Future Technology. GEMS promotes community service and teaches social and life skills for all participants to develop young men and women of excellence.

In 2015, the Student and Future Technology (SaFT) program was established by Science Advisor Richard Springfield to help stretch students understanding and ability to current knowledge of science and new concepts.  With the partnership developed with the First Ward Community Center and DOW Promise support, we were able to purchase the first zSpace 3D Virtual Reality STEM lab that has ignited the interest of the Saginaw Public School District and other school districts in the Great Lakes Bay Region.  We also secured classroom and office space in 2014 at SVRC/Learn to Earn Academy to better serve youth in need.  Women of Colors spends countless hours to enrich the culture of volunteerism and service that makes the Saginaw community a great place for individuals and families to work, have fun, and live.

The annual Warm a Child for Winter was developed in 2014, and approximately new and gently used coats, hats, scarves, and gloves have been donated to 1,500 disadvantaged youth.  In November 2016, we received 1,500 request for coats, and donated approximately 500 coats.

In 2006, the first WOC Annual Woman of the Year Award Banquet was established for deserving women within the organization who had made outstanding contributions to WOC and the community.  The banquet advanced in 2014, to hosted the first annual WOC Community Leadership Awards Banquet to recognize outstanding a business and individuals in the Great Lakes Bay Region who have made extraordinary contributions to enrich the lives of others in six (6) categories that include Achievement Award, Distinguish Gentlemen Award, Volunteer Award, Woman of the Year Award, Woman of the Future Award, Community Service (Business/Organization).  The honorees are recognized for their community involvement, commitment by exemplifying the spirit of volunteerism.

In 2011, WOC partnered with the Saginaw Community Foundation to establish the Annual Women of Colors Scholarship Fund to give opportunities to well-deserving students.  The scholarship gives honor to students who have demonstrated a commitment to higher education.  WOC advocates leadership, respect, and trust as vital characteristics to succeed, and we do not discriminate against sex, age, race, and religion.
