WAW IS DEDICATED to securing and protecting the rights of disenfranchised Afghan women and girls in Afghanistan and New York, particularly their rights to develop their individual potential, to self-determination, and to be represented in all areas of life: political, social, cultural and economic. We advocate for women’s rights and challenge the norms that underpin gender-based violence wherever opportunities arise to influence attitudes and bring about change.
WAW was founded in New York in April 2001. We opened our Community Center in Queens in 2002. Our first Family Guidance Center and women’s shelter opened in Kabul in 2007. We are the leading organization in Afghanistan and the only organization in New York dedicated to upholding the rights of Afghan women and girls.
