BENEFITING: WOMEN ORGANIZED TO MAKE ABUSE NON EXISTENT INC
EVENT: Purple Purse Challenge
EVENT DATE: Oct 27, 2015
When I first got involved with W.O.M.A.N., Inc. almost 8 years ago it was because I had a connection to domestic violence like many folks who do the work. My heart has always been focused on racial justice though, and after being a volunteer at W.O.M.A.N., Inc. and moving into the role of staff, I was able to put my life experience, and the lives of folks who reach out to W.O.M.A.N., Inc. into perspective. Domestic violence is a single story. Right now there are people that are dealing with other forms of oppression like systemic racisim, homophobia, transphobia, sexism, etc. in addition to the abuse they may facing in a relationship. How do we, as a society, address this?
There are organizations out there that are doing more innovative work that address the intersections of varying forms of oppression, and W.O.M.A.N., Inc. is one of them. As an organization we recognize that domestic violence is a community issue and community healing is a powerful thing. We're currently creating an organizational culture where advocates act as facilitators and we're collaborating with participants by learning how they heal and we're providing them with tools and leadership skills so they can take it back to their communities.
W.O.M.A.N., Inc. is pretty badass. :) Please donate to my page which then goes all to the organization I'm proud to be a part of, and help us continue to build on a social justice framework.
