BENEFITING: WOMENRISING INC
My name is Ashley and in 2010, WomenRising saved my life. At 22 years old, I found myself in an inpatient substance abuse program with three beautiful children who were mainly taken care of by my mother. As I completed the program I was in, I was given two options: go home and continue the dangerous path I was headed down, or interview with a program called Project Home at WomenRising in Jersey City.
Before my interview, feeling defeated by the system and life, I had decided there was no way I wanted to get into Project Home. I didn’t think I needed their support and wanted to do everything on my own. As soon as I sat down with the staff, I fell in love with them and the program. I needed to get in! I called the Director after my interview and explained to her again and again how badly I wanted to be in Project Home. Minutes later, she called me back and offered me a spot.
At Project Home I learned how to be a mother and provide my children with a better life. I got my GED and gained the confidence to be self-sufficient. The staff loved me like I was their family and helped me to see the world in a different way, full of possibilities. As the best year of my life came to a close, I knew I would be forever grateful for my time at Project Home. After graduation I received Section 8 housing and have remained in touch with the other women in the program through an alumni network.
At one point after I let Project Home, I found myself back in regular life and falling into old habits. Through the counseling I had received, I knew I needed to ask for help, and I immediately knew where I needed to go, WomenRising. I was quickly set up with a counselor whose focus was bringing my family together and helping me be the best mother and person I could be. I have never felt judged at WomenRising and have always felt supported. Thanks to WomenRising, I now have a full time job at Blue Apron and just got a raise and promotion!
I hope that you will make a gift to WomenRising. Your support of this amazing organization will help more women to realize their potential and achieve a better life for themselves and their families.
