The Women’s Intercultural Center educates, empowers and engages women in Southern NM and West TX. In an area where a large number of the population are immigrants, single mothers with 4.5 children and an average education of third grade. The Center addresses the need for alternative education and personal development, economic self-sufficiency and facilitates the assimilation of the immigrant population into the fabric of American life without losing or sacrificing their cultural heritage and values of their native country. The ability to help them assimilate and socialize is utilized as a method to prevent depression and other mental health issues that may arise due to isolation and fear of living in a country that is not their country of birth.
Additionally, the Center designs and develops programming, tools and resources based on the needs of Center participants and members of the respective communities the Center serves.
The Center literally is the “Google” of the region. If anyone encounters any challenge, barrier or problem they cannot handle, they are referred to the Center where they receive the assistance to secure or attain their desired resolution, outcome or goal.
The Center is also a playground that incubates other organizations, projects or programs with a capacity to evolve beyond the Center to serve the greater need of the region and the world. A prime example is The Virtual Dinner Guest Project which was launched here at the Center and now is based in Spain and launched internationally. Local initiatives includes the incubation of Legal Immigration Services to prove the need and the ability to succeed which later were turned over to the Las Cruces Catholic Charities for them to continue the services. The State of NM also works with the Center, together we coordinated the test and field launch of a Medicaid Kiosk at the Center which are now placed in clinics throughout the state.
Yet, the Center’s impact is best said by a former participant whose life we transformed: “The Women's intercultural Center helped me in so many ways. I was able to take counseling that the center was giving every Tuesday and let go of the fears and problems that I held with me and the Center also helped me build confidence to be able to get up on my two feet again..I was able to get into a school program and get my GED…and succeed in my life..with these little tools the that Center provided for me I was able to go forward into the real world and become a better woman and mother to my kids…anybody that needs resources to get things done in life Mary Carter takes it to the next level to lend you a helping hand...and guide you to the right resources…Thank you Mary Carter for all that you have helped me with you are forever in my heart and your words I will always remember…Thank you Women's Intercultural Center for all that you have taught me...and for helping me become a stronger woman and mother!!”
