It's my birthday!!
On Wednesday, February 4, I will be turning 32 years old. I am excited to celebrate with all of you, my friends and family, and to rejoice in all the love and happiness I have in my life.
I am also looking forward to sharing the love and helping those who have not had as many opportunities as I have had. In lieu of gifts, I ask that each of you consider doing the same. It would mean the world to me if everyone helped contribute to the 5th Annual Women's Day in Eastern Afghanistan. Over the years I have had friends working in Afghanistan to build shelter schools for children who need access to a safe place to learn. These same friends also brought internet access to rural Afghanistan to help people connect with one another and further their education. Now they are working hard to bring solar power to Afghan women and children!
While they are busy doing the hard part, the least we can do is pitch in and provide them with the tools they need to make a difference. I have included a bit more info below for those interested in donating or learning more:
5th Annual Women’s Day in Eastern Afghanistan
Following three decades of war, Afghan women struggle with illiteracy and to support, on average, six children. One in ten of those children won't live to see their fifth birthday. This year is even more critical than usual, as the situation on the ground is getting less and less supportive for women.
This year will be our fifth event and we hope to extend our resources to women in more remote areas of Afghanistan. These areas are the most vulnerable. What we find most extraordinary about this population is the enormous difference very little can make in their lives - by providing solar power and internet access, a world of opportunity opens up to each and every family. Imagine having a sick child with no access to medical care? The ability to read, email a doctor or learn basic treatment can easily be the difference between life and death.
What we love most about these women is that they are DEMANDING IT!!!! This isn’t some idea we cooked up. We are responding to strong pressure from local women for solar powered Internet labs, and we hope to make their dream a reality.
Every bit helps!
Thanks all, and I hope to see you soon,
