Women's empowerment&TEFL; volunteering in developing nations
Organized by: Isabel Smith
I been fortunate enough to have the amazing opportunity to work as a community volunteer and teacher for the next 6 months.
In March 2016, money permitting, I will be travelling to the Cook islands to volunteer as a teacher. Whilst being some of the most flawlessly beautiful places in existence, the Cook Islands are economically limited and largely dependent on tourism for growth and income, which is a precarious and unevenly dispersed source of financial security. Outside of the central larger islands, many of the smaller atolls suffer and education is under-funded and very poorly resourced. I will be in the Cook islands for 3 months and will also spend time outside of the classroom helping with some much needed renovation and rebuilding.
This opportunity will also help me gain a BTEC qualification in TEFL( teaching English as a foreign language); which will aid me to pursue my dreams of being a teacher.
After I leave the in the Cook islands I will be travelling to Brazil for another 3 months to participate in a women's empowerment project in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro. The aim of the project is to provide women in poverty the chance to learn new skills such as sewing, shoe making and other handicrafts. These new skills as well as promoting creativity and entrepreneurship will enable these women to improve their self-esteem and allow them access to a safe community place away from the dangers of Rio's favelas.
I will be living with an indigenous family during my time in both the Cook islands and Brazil and so part of the money raised will go to them alongside the vast majority which will go to their communities.
The cost of the Cook islands project is $3500 which includes the cost of my TEFL certificate and qualification as well as a funding for the project, a donation to the community, accommodation and food. The cost of the Rio Women's empowerment is $3000 which includes funding for the project, a donation to the community, accommodation and food.
There will be additional expenses such as flights (approx. $2000), departure fees, Loss of earnings, rent payments etc. However I plan to cover these myself by working full-time 6 days a week as well as other small jobs on the side . Even with the support of my family and contributing my earnings this trip would not be possible without the help of you!
Therefore I will be grateful for any donation, however big or small, as every dollar will get me closer to volunteering and my dream of teaching and helping others. Thank you for taking the time to read this and please know that all money raised will go to the projects and communities involved not a personal holiday fund for me! Thank you in advance for any support you are able to offer me.
Best Wishes Izzy
