Domestic abuse in Nepal is rampant. The leading cause of death among women of childbearing age is suicide. Widows are tossed out and branded as witches. Victims of the sex trade are shunned by families. These women have no where to go. They are skilled farmers, they can support themselves and feed their children if they have a little land. Our farm cooperative will provide them with shelter and place to grow food. That's the essential needs, without which they will stay trapped in abuse.
We've purchased two plots of land in the village of Mankhu in the Dhading district and have two families, total of six children living and farming on the land now. As soon as we can raise the funds we have an urgent need to construct more housing to provide a place to live for the women and children who are waiting for this opportunity.
Agriculture is Nepal’s largest business enterprise and accounts for more than 40% of the Gross Domestic Product. Studies on the status of Nepalese women have revealed that they not only play a major role in agriculture, but constitute the “backbone” of Nepali agriculture.
Here's the facts about agriculture, women and Nepal. Control of land is number one need, following that, the evidence is there that women are very active in agriculture, more so than the men who all own the land. Give women control of land and the paradigm shifts.
