“Microcredit alone, without social development programming, is limited in its ability to alleviate poverty. Poverty is a multifaceted issue and must be addressed within this context. Microfinance is not a panacea but a powerful tool that when bundled with social programming, can give women and their families increased control over their lives.” K. Sugar, WGEF Founder
Mission and Values of WGEF:
Women's Global Empowerment Fund (WGEF) provides economic, social, and political opportunities to women and famiilies. We seek to offer women leadership and empowerment abilities required to lead successful, dignified lives. Unique opportunities exist in post conflict regions for women to seize the moment, rebuilding societies & traditional political order. Using micro financing coupled with our Leadership Development and Literacy Programs, the women we serve are able to become stable, independent, and empowered figures of the community. Our goal is to create mechanisms of change to increase women's participation through Leadership Development Initiatives, thereby promoting advocacy, activism, and long-term sustainability of the women we serve.
WGEF values our clients, their autonomy, and their desire for self-determination. WGEF's micro-finance loans are given to groups of four to fifteen women that come with business endeavors of their choosing. These groups also form their own committees that have an internal treasurer, chair, etc. to instill their own autonomy and leadership development from its foundation. Thru participation in the literacy and leadership development trainings, our clients are able to take their skills and tools to their households and communities: becoming leaders in their communities, addressing their basic needs, while rebuilding and recovering their lives.
“Other than improving my economic status, through the literacy program I learnt how to read and write, the event also made me discover my talents in drama and the other performances which made me very happy and in the end my health was also improved.” – WGEF Client
Specific Goals and Activities 2015 and Beyond:
While the cornerstone of the Credit Plus program is economic activity, we focus intensely on 3 areas of social and political development: literacy, leadership development and health initiatives. In 2015 our focus will be on citizen journalism, advocacy and political engagement. This is critical leading up to the next national election in 2016; we have many clients intending to run for elected office, working in the community and engaging in the political system. In 2011, 5 WGEF clients ran for public office with 3 successful outcomes. WGEF client Grace, is currently holding elected office with the hope of running for Parliament in 2016. This is a remarkable outcome, as just a few years ago, Grace and her family were living in an IDP camp not knowing what their future might hold.
The motivation behind the program is based on the belief that women are natural leaders, and when given opportunities, are able to determine their own futures, play an important role in their communities and countries, and rise above poverty with dignity.
We believe that a woman can be an agent of change in her own life, determining her own future.
