We have just returned from the Standing Rock Reservation in North Dakota where the largest gathering of Native Americans in history are presently defending their sacred lands against the Dakota Access Oil Pipeline. They are chanting and praying and their efforts are being met with tear gas, blasts of icy water and rubber bullets.
People from all over the world are peacefully supporting the Standing Rock Sioux - pleading 'no' to the violations of their land and water from an outmoded legacy of oil extraction by fracking. This is clearly a dangerous system of energy extraction and exploitation that will have far reaching consequences to the health and viability of the water for all of us, and to our way of life for generations to come.
It is my intention to bring 15 wood stoves to Sacred Stone Camp and generate enough extra funds for firwood. TO BE CLEAR: None of these funds will go to my personal travel expenses to get out there.
I am sure a lot of people feel strongly about protecting our water sources and preserving sacred Native American sites. But along with that is the imperative that we as citizens have the opportunity to fight social injustice when it slaps us in the face.
Energy Transfer Partner's violent bullying tactics don't have a place in this country. The resilient and peaceful stance of the first Nation tribes and their allies should win in a sane world, but they need our support!
In the words of the Irish poet Seamus Heaney: "BUT THEN, ONCE IN A LIFETIME, THE TIDAL WAVE OF JUSTICE RISES UP, AND HOPE AND HISTORY RHYME." Help us start a tidal wave of justice for First Nation Tribes of Standing Rock, and believe that hope and history can rhyme. Thank you.
