BENEFITING: MARSHALLTOWN YMCA-YWCA
Seeing these faces - happy, smiling and exhausted! The Woodbury Fit Kids after school program is what many kids look forward to at the end of their days. If you stop any one of these kids, they all have a favorite activity. For many it's Zumba! For others, game time, arts and crafts, and for others, snack-time! I was there, the snacks looked pretty delicious. This program is designed to be two-fold. Nearly 87% of Woodbury Elementary families qualify for free or reduced lunch and approximately 78% are English language learners. The program provides an avenue to promote healthy life-styles among the students. Students benefit from the program by taking place in fun, interactive activities like sports, field trips, crafts and educational opportunities supporting literacy and partnerships with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. Woodbury Fit Kids is used for after school care when children may otherwise be home by themselves or staying with extended family while their parents are at work. Childcare is an expense that many of these families cannot afford so they often struggle to find safe, reliable care for their children.
