Help me raise nearly $40 per mile for the NYC marathon. My name is Woody (Woodworth) Mataele and I’m looking to make a difference by following a cause that hits close to home and means a great deal to me. I strongly believe that as human beings, we all yearn for something more and meaningful in life and this is my journey in moving beyond ‘myself’ to make a difference.
February of this year and in 2010, I lost my older brother Ke’aloha (33 years old) and father, Ma’asi Mataele (57 years old), prematurely to heart disease/heart failure and this is my fight against the disease that contributes to nearly twenty-five percent (25%) of all the deaths in this country. Words can’t describe the blow this has been to our family; the sudden lost of our father (our Rock) and later our dear brother earlier this year. With that said I have taken on this cause for the last three years and want to assist in even the smallest possible way I can in fighting this battle by bring education, awareness, and prevention to the disease. The risk of heart disease can be decreased and with your help, we can fight together and save our love ones and ourselves.
What We Need
My goal is to raise $1,000 to assist in this battle. 100% of the funds raised will be donated to The Michael H. Ludwig Memorial Foundation (www.michaelludwigfoundation.org), a foundation I admire and have become passionate about. Michael Ludwig died at age 9 from an undetected congenital heart defect. Michael was a solid athlete who loved life and had a passion for many sports; at times he had trouble with sustained running but always seemed to bounce right back. No one including numerous doctors and Michael's parents ever believed he was in any danger.
In the wake of the unbelievable, Michael's parents created this foundation with its aim to improve awareness, detection and treatment of life-threatening congenital heart conditions, especially among young athletes. Supporting the New York Marathon -- an excellent example of sustained running -- is consistent with the Foundation's mission and is a fitting tribute to Michael. With that said, I have joined and am committed to “Running for Young Hearts” team once again on behalf of the Michael H. Ludwig Memorial Foundation in the 2013 ING New York City Marathon in November. I am ecstatic to participate and be able to raise funds to fight this disease that has taken my love ones and a young friend I have never met. Your contribution will go a long way and will be greatly appreciated by myself and the Michael H. Ludwig Foundation.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping me fight, I truley appreciate your support. Malo!
