Workers' Rights to Black Liberation - MN to Colombia
Organized by: Eden Yosief
Ya’ll i have a last minute opportunity to join a delegation of lovers and fighters who are traveling to Colombia in a couple weeks to witness and document the ongoing struggle among Indigenous and Afro-Colombian communities who have been surviving in unimaginable conditions and facing horrific violence. I'm thankful to be invited back to continue this work, and that I have a community that's invested in me to help me do it.
Some may know that I traveled to Colombia with Witness for Peace in October 2013 on a similar delegation that was centered around studying the Free Trade Agreements between the Colombian and US governments, labor conditions and land issues that disproportionately affects Afro-Colombians and Indigenous people. The experience was unforgettable, stories were heart wrenching yet so full of hope..inspiration.... creativity.... strength..... determination ...resilience
One of our first days on the ground we visited a healing center for survivors of violence that provides services like massage, acupuncture and aromatherapy to survivors and their families. We spoke with the people who run the place and I couldn’t believe the levels of violence people had endured themselves that were still providing healing to others. Now it’s clear to me that we heal ourselves when we help others heal. It reminded me that some things are only luxuries because they’ve been marketed to us in that way, to keep them out of our reach and in the hands of the oppressor. It’s up to us to live fully, dream big and build all that we deserve.
I want to build on my knowledge and connect further with people who are fighting alongside us, across borders as well as think about how we can build strategically when we return home to support the work of labor activists and freedom fighters around the world. I believe in this work and the power of global solidarity that brings awareness of how our lives, our choices, and hardships are interconnected. Thanks for reading this and if you feel like you can, consider supporting me with a donation. If you want more information about Witness for Peace or want to follow up with me about our delegation, don't hesitate to contact me.
