This June, world leaders will gather in New York City at the United Nations to discuss one of the most pressing world issues: the ocean. Illegal fishing threatens species, sustenance, and economies worldwide; pollution in the form of chemical run-off, spills, plastics and more damages and destroys marine life and enters our food chain, climate change is killing our coral reefs, flooding human and animal habitats and feeding a disastrous feedback loop of rising world temperatures. The ocean not only sustains marine life, but our own – connecting us all across the world, providing sustenance, transport, economies, livelihoods. With this vital purpose, the UN General Assembly will convene the “Ocean Conference” in June 5-9, 2017 with the theme: “Our oceans, our future: partnering for the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14.” Co-hosted by the Governments of Fiji and Sweden, the conference will include meetings, dialogues, and events with an aim to agree on and adopt a “Call for Action” for Goal 14. In an effort to raise the voices of millions of people and organizations who care deeply about the ocean and who will stand together for their protection, it is our pleasure to introduce the World Ocean Festival 2017 will take place on June 4, 2017. This inaugural festival will be hosted by the City of New York and organized by the Global Brain Foundation. People from all over the world will be invited to join the World Ocean Festival in a celebration of the power and beauty of our ocean and the urgent need to take action to preserve and protect it on June 4. Festival activities will include: The Ocean March - a first-of-its-kind parade of large and small boats on the water in New York harbor and in coastal cities around the work; and The Ocean Village - a celebration of art, education, innovation and tools for action in support of the ocean. Brands and organizations who are working in a direct effort to protect the ocean, as well as those who share a deep concern for raising attention on this important issue, are invited to join in collaboration with Global Brain and the City of New York for this event.
