Joyeta Goswami via Crowdrise
August 16, 2012
My name is Joyeta Goswami, I am a housing and sanitation professional from India, with nearly 4 years of work experience in the non-profit sector. I have worked on many socio-economic projects in India, and was able to understand the need for sanitation. Having visited several slums in Delhi, the experience opened doorways for me to take up the issue of sanitation, devise a community level model to improve the same. In March 2012, I was awarded Atlas Corps Fellowship. My deep interest in Housing and Sanitation led me to serve at Habitat for Humanity International in Washington D.C. Being at Habitat has not just been phenomenal for my growth but I have also been encouraged to really take on issues of Sanitation from a Global point of view. At Habitat I at currently working on WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene), Global Housing Indicators, on gender issues related to housing, etc. EVERY day while I travelled to work in India, I would pass through affluent areas of New Delhi ( for those familiar with R.K. Puram). And despite this affluency, these neighbourhoods had 8 slums. Witnessing people still defacate on roads inspite of a Public Toilet facility, irked me but also motivated me to visit these slums.
This experience led me to devoting my coming years to the cause. At Habitat I have been given the oppportunity to present at the Youth Assembly and speak at the session on Engaging Youth in Urban Water and Sanitation.
Via this conference I shall be representing not just Habitat and Atlascorps but also the millions who lack adequate sanitation. As the second step to making an impact on the issue of sanitation, I shall be engaging with UN-Habitat officials, Government officials, civil- society organisations and others and create a discourse around the subject.
As one last step to being at the World Urban Forum, I am still to organise funds to attend the conference. I have been invited to the conference, but I am still required to cover my own travel expenses. I am part funding by tickets to Naples, Italy, but unfortunately being on a limited budget, I would request you to help me in this cause.
I will be in Naples, Italy from August 29th, 2012 to September, 7th 2012. My budget is $1750 including visa, travel (part )and lodging. Understanding how important it is fro me to assure you that your contribution is going towards the right cause, I wish to share with you my expected expediture details:
FLIGHT (round trip - Washington DC to Naples, Italy): $600 (1200, I have saved to pay $600)
