BENEFITING: WORLD AFFAIRS COUNCIL OF PITTSBURGH
ORGANIZER: WORLD AFFAIRS COUNCIL OF PITTSBURGH
EVENT DATE: May 04, 2014
In May, I'll be running my first full marathon! Why go through all these long, cold months of hard training?
I previously ran two half-marathons, one in Pittsburgh and one in Columbus. Both were for charity. I love running, and I especially love doing it for a great cause. In running this marathon, I've pledged to fund raise for the World Affair's Council of Pittsburgh. This is my second year running for them. The money I raise will help support their award-winning, global education programs which they provide to underserved schools in the Pittsburgh area.
I'm running to support global education, because so many issues in our world can be solved through understanding and knowledge. Unfortunately, many stigmas and stereotypes surround nations that are thousands of miles and oceans away. The distance is one contributing factor in creating a harsh cultural divide that education can help to break. I think it is important to be understanding and open to cultures different than our own and to debunk the stereotypes that are too often believed.
The World Affairs Council brings award-winning programs and activities, which I have experienced personally, to underserved schools through the Pittsburgh region. These programs give teachers and students a better understaning of global issues. I had the honor of being part of the Global Travel Scholarship program in 2010 and a Global Travel Fellow in 2012. My time abroad changed my life and my perspectives of the world.
I am beyond grateful for the opportunities I have had with the World Affairs Council. Without them, I don't think I would even be in the same place that I am right now. It is important to me to see the Council have the ability to continue their programs and to continue to broaden their reach.
Thank you all for your support!
